Army Reserve nurses attend summer training on campus

More than 400 members of the U.S. Army Reserve-from as far away
as Wisconsin and Alabama-are attended nursing classes and training
courses on campus this summer as part of the 2076th U.S. Army Reserve
Nursing School, which was coordinated by personnel from the nearby
Kirkwood U.S. Army Reserve Center.
Polly Weir, conference services, who was involved in arranging
the program's return to the UD campus, said the reservists stayed in
the Pencader Residence Hall Complex and Christiana Towers, ate in
Pencader and Rodney dining facilities and held informal meetings in
Clayton Hall.
According to Howard Riggleman, certifying officer from U.S. Army
Headquarters 80th Division, Institutional Training, in Richmond, Va.,
the sessions-which ran from July 21-Aug. 9-were part of the two-week
training conducted annually for military reserve personnel. Throughout
the year, he said, the units hold on-site nursing training.
The UD summer sessions allowed those in the program to work in
area hospitals and gain practical experience toward nursing
certification.
While first-year attendees received their classroom instruction
in Smith Hall, second- and third-year upper-class students were
transported for clinical training to a number of area health
facilities, including the VA medical centers at Elsmere, Del., and
Perry Point, Md., A.I. duPont Institute and St. Francis and Kent
General, Riverside, Christiana and Wilmington hospitals.
Jan Ziesing is the UD events manager was involved with the day-to-
day operation of the program, coordinating UD services and facilities
with U.S. Army personnel.
