Southern Delawareans can get HRIM degree close to home
Residents of southern Delaware looking for careers in the
multifaceted hospitality industry now can earn a bachelor's degree in
hotel, restaurant and institutional management (HRIM) from the
University without traveling to Newark.
Thanks to distance learning, students can take classes through
videotape delivery of courses.
The hospitality industry is projected to be one of the fastest
growing industries worldwide into the next century. The HRIM
curriculum consists of liberal arts, business and specialized courses
in technical applications for the hotel, restaurant and related
industries.
Graduates are qualified for a broad range of managerial positions
in catering, meeting planning, food service management, guest
relations, hotel front desk office management, resort management and
more.
Courses being offered this fall include "Introduction to
Hospitality," "Property Management," "Management of Lodging
Operations" and "Laws of Innkeeping."
Designed for students whose work or lifestyle prevents
participation in traditional college classes on campus, distance
learning uses video technology to deliver classes at the student's
convenience.
Students interact with faculty by telephone during phone-in
office hours, by fax or by voice mail. Student assessment takes place
through papers or projects, evaluated by faculty, proctored tests or
by take-home exams.
At UD, the distance learning program is known as FOCUS, which
stands for Flexible Options for Continuing University Study.
