United Way planning committee meets, sets goal
This year, the University will join other employers throughout
the state in celebrating the 50th anniversary of United Way of
Delaware with a campaign theme, "Join a New Generation of Caring."
In 1995, the United Way of Delaware's record-breaking campaign
raised $18,663,567. As the organization and its agencies enter its
sixth decade, in 49 campaigns, it has raised more than $348 million
and allocated more than $300 million to help those in need.
At a planning committee meeting July 16, Maxine Colm, vice
president for administration, said she was extremely satisfied with
last year's results, as well as this year's planning and scheduled
activities. She pointed out that the University met and exceeded last
year's $155,000 UD goal.
President David P. Roselle announced the 1996 goal as $160,000.
He also pointed out that "The social service needs among numerous
members of our University community are considerable.
"It's important for the University to be a part of the United
Way's fund-raising efforts. Many of our University colleagues are
users of its services, and many others are volunteers who work in
support of the members agencies. These needs and this spirit of giving
and helping deserve our individual financial support," Roselle said.
According to Colm, who has served on United Way of Delaware
committees with other educational representatives and chairs the
University's United Way efforts, "University faculty and staff are
truly the backbone of the United Way's higher education campaign. Our
faculty and staff have increased their contributions each year because
United Way agencies and affiliated groups touch the lives of so many,
directly or indirectly. I am proud to be involved in the planning for
the 1996 campaign, and I am confident that we will again exceed our
announced goal."
As in past years, the 1996 campus campaign will include the
Pacesetters' drive, office solicitations, an official kickoff,
incentives and an end-of-campaign reception.
Production is under way for a video featuring employees who have
been involved as volunteers or who have benefited from participating
agencies. Also, volunteers and agency board members will be profiled
throughout the campaign in issues of UpDate.
Roland Smith, vice president for student life, is this year's
Pacesetters' campaign chairperson. The group of senior administrators
makes contributions from Sept. 9-23, prior to the start of the general
campus campaign, which will run from Oct. 1-23.
According to Smith, "During the Pacesetters' campaign, which is
the first phase of the fund drive, senior administrators will be asked
to set an example for the rest of the campus community before the
official campaign begins in October.
"Our generous pledges of support will show our commitment and
encourage others to give to the extent they are able. Through our
support, United Way agencies will be able to fulfill their critically
important role of assisting those members of Delaware communities who
need our help."
Last year, the Pacesetters contributed $17,068 to the successful
campaign.
The 1996 planning committee includes Charlene Benson, Supporting
Services; Robert Davis, alumni and University relations; Bob DiIorio,
media services; Winifred Harris employee services; Pete Hayward,
University secretary and vice president; Sylvester Johnson, Bob
Carpenter Center; Ed Okonowicz, public relations; Matt Shipp,

The 1996 UD United Way co-chairpersons are Karen Garrett and
Joyce Dennis Henderson, employee services.
Skelley will be involved in the Days of Caring program, whose
emphasis during this year's campaign will be on student involvement.
The kickoff reception will be held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1,
in the Bob Carpenter Center, and an electronic video link will occur
with a program being conducted at the same time on the University
campus in Sussex County.
As in past years, the University will conduct an incentive raffle
program to encourage employees to give or increase their United Way
contributions.
