Elm disease claims trees
Dutch elm disease felled five trees on the Mall this summer-two
near Sypherd Hall and others near Sharp Laboratory, Hullihen Hall and
soon-to-be-built Gore Hall, according to Roger Bowman, grounds. Some
will be replaced by Village Green zelkovas, which resemble elms but
are more resistant to disease.
A hallmark of the central campus, the elms are protected as much
as possible by an ongoing program of preventive care, and it has been
effective in preventing widespread infection, Bowman said. Dead wood
is removed, fungicide is injected and plant pathology tests are run.
Trees that have the disease must be removed to protect those that do
not.
There are approximately 90 elms left on University land in
northern Delaware, Bowman said.
