ELI hosts diverse groups for English language training
We are a working, thriving United Nations," Scott Stevens,
director of the English Language Institute (ELI), said.
ELI is in full summer swing, serving as host to individuals from
45 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South Pacific
Rim and South America. Enrollment doubles in the summer with 420
students enrolled in 14 programs, Stevens said. The students represent
law, business, government and education, and ELI teaches them English,
offers specialized professional programs and gives international
visitors opportunities to experience American culture.
Among the international groups represented in Newark this summer
are
* 18 students, from the University of Grenada in Spain, who
are here for a second year to study English and teaching
methodology. The coordinator is Susan Edgell.
* 15 young professionals in such fields as medicine and
engineering from different cities in Colombia. They are
improving their English before attending U.S. graduate
schools and are assigned language partners and host
families. The program is sponsored by the Institute of
International Education (IIE) and the coordinator is Leslie
Criston.
* 24 administrators and teachers of English from Africa,
enrolled in the Summer Institute for English as a Foreign
Language. The coordinator is Grant Wolf.
* 16 lawyers, judges and law students from different countries
enrolled in the American Law and Legal Institute to learn
about the American justice system and terminology prior to
attending U.S. law schools. The coordinator is Chris Wolf,
esq.
* Nine business professionals enrolled in the Summer
International Business Institute. They are improving their
English and learning about American business practices and
terminology. The coordinator is Michelle Kline.
* 16 students from Shoin Women's University in Kobe, Japan,
participating in an exchange program with the University.
The coordinator is Janet Louise.
* 10 Thai graduate students, selected by their embassy, and
five Fulbright scholars from different countries attend the
Thailand/IIE Pre-academic Program to improve their English
before attending U.S. graduate schools. The coordinator is
Mary McCloskey.
* 10 federal employees from Korea who are learning English and
studying American practices in public administration. The
coordinator is James Slater.
* Eight women from Brazil with connections to the legal
profession. The coordinator is Wendy Bulkowski.
In addition, there are other individualized programs, and ELI
offers the International Teaching Assistants Program for foreign
students who will be teaching at the University in the fall.
