Nicaraguan grads earn food science certificates

Another commencement took place on campus June 14 as 14
Nicaraguan students received their certificates as food science
technicians in a ceremony in Alison Hall.
Participants in the Nicaraguan Peace Scholarship program,
sponsored on the U.S. Agency for International Development, the
students were on campus for an 18-month-long intensive program,
learning English at the English Language Institute and taking food
science courses, coordinated by Mir Islam, animal and food sciences.
Each student specialized in a particular area of food processing
and gained extensive laboratory experience in production.
A component of the program was community service, and students
completed volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, the Newark
Community Food Co-op, the Newark Manor Nursing Home and the Newark
United Methodist Church. They also gave cultural presentations for
churches, schools and conferences.
The group traveled to New Orleans on June 22 to attend the
International Food Technologists convention before they returned home
on June 27, to help develop the food processing industry in Nicaragua.
