Artists featured in July exhibition
     Works by illustrator and calligrapher Riva Brown and
watercolorist Angie Murray will be on exhibit through July 31 in the
lobby of Clayton Hall, where a free public reception will be held from
6-8 p.m., Friday, July 12.
     Brown, Delaware '75, will showcase approximately 30 of her works,
including pencil and pen-and-ink illustrations, as well as watercolors
depicting flowers and landscapes. She is a 1994 recipient of an
individual artist fellowship in the folk arts category.
     Murray, a native of South Korea, will present paintings on rice
paper. The owner of Angie's Bridal and Formal in Newark, she also will
show examples of her custom-designed bridal headpieces.

Tour area's past in Old New Castle
     Lu Ann De Cunzo, anthropology, is leading excavations at the
George Read House, 42 The Strand, New Castle.
     Formal tours of the work are offered at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and
at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, through July 19.
     "Unearthing New Castle's Past: Archaeology in the Read House
Garden" is the name of the joint project of the UD Department of
Anthropology and the Historical Society of Delaware.
     Special archaeology demonstrations and activities for adults and
children will be held from 9 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m. as part of a
special public tour of the archaeology in the garden, entitled
"Beneath Our Feet," which will be conducted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.,
Saturday, July 20.

Newark fireworks Thursday night
     The city of Newark will present a Fireworks Display, beginning at
dusk, on Thursday, July 4.
     The display will originate from the University practice football
field. Free parking will be available in all of the athletic complex
parking lots off of South College Avenue and in Chrysler Lot #2, with
entrances off South College Avenue and Route 4.
     The fireworks will be visible from the parking area, and no
alcoholic beverages will be permitted in any of the viewing areas.

Dance program in Mitchell July 15
     The Lula Washington Dance Theatre from Inglewood, Calif., will
present a free concert from noon-1 p.m., Monday, July 15, in Mitchell
Hall. The performance is a prelude to a University residency next
March by the company as part of the Performing Arts Series.
     The repertoire of the 156-year-old company ranges from
traditional West African dance to contemporary choreography inspired
by human conditions in the 20th century.
     The July performance, part of the Delaware Institute for Arts in
Education Summer Institute, is sponsored by the University's
