Award recipients gather at annual Mae Carter luncheon

Winners of the Mae Carter Award for Returning Adult Women
Students are doubly honored. Not only do they receive recognition for
their accomplishments and a cash award, but Carter and her husband,
Robert, host an annual luncheon each year for the awardees in the
area. The tradition began in 1985 when the first award was given.
The award honors Carter, who was formerly assistant provost for
women's affairs and executive director of the Commission on the Status
of Women, and is given to a returning adult woman student who has been
of service to women on campus and has demonstrated a commitment to
scholarship.
The women are all enthusiastic about the luncheons and look
forward to them each spring as a time to renew friendships and welcome
the newest honoree, Carter said.
This year's recipient is Catherine L. Hamill, a sociology
/psychology major who currently is involved in a national children's
rights organization, Hear My Voice.
She also speaks on sexual abuse issues at the women's prison and
in women's studies classes.
Carter said she is proud of the honorees, a varied, accomplished
and interesting group of women who have made their mark in different
fields of endeavor.
