UD medal presented to foundation executive

Endsley P. Fairman former secretary, senior vice president and
head of the Trust Department at Wilmington Trust Co., was awarded the
University of Delaware Medal of Distinction June 10 by Edward G.
Jefferson, a member of the University Board of Trustees' Executive
Committee.
Fairman, who served as executive secretary of both the Longwood
Foundation Inc. and the Welfare Foundation from 1973-92, was honored
for his spirit of philanthropy, service to others and noteworthy
success in his chosen profession.
During the presentation, Jefferson noted Fairman's magna cum
laude graduation from Princeton University, distinguished 43-year
career with the Wilmington Trust Co. and service in the U.S. Air
Force, retiring as a colonel after 21 years as a reserve officer.
Fairman also received the European Theatre Medal with six battle stars
and was decorated with the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the
French Croix de Guerre.
He has served as a director on the boards of the Medical Center
of Delaware and the Nursing School of Wilmington and as president of
the Wilmington Country Club. He continues to serve as executive
secretary of the Marmot Foundation, a post he has held since 1968.
According to Jefferson, the University, and educational,
cultural, historical and numerous other nonprofit organizations
throughout the state have "been the beneficiary of Endsley Fairman's
thoughtful counsel and we are indeed deeply grateful.
"It has been said," Jefferson continued, "that humility is the
better part of wisdom. Endsley, if that is the case, you are very wise
indeed. Your life's work has been, and continues to be, marked by
great humility and kindness. Today, we honor you for all you have done
by presenting the University of Delaware Medal of Distinction."
The Medal of Distinction recognizes individuals who have made
humanitarian, cultural, intellectual or scientific contributions to
society, have achieved noteworthy success in their professions or have
given significant service to the community, state or region.
