Nutrition posters focus on folate
Posters created by students in a nutrition education class may
soon grace the walls of the Student Health Center. In a course taught
by Carolyn Manning, students developed posters about the vitamin,
folate.
According to Manning, folate is a timely issue in the field of
nutrition because research has linked it to neural tube defects (NTD)
in infants. According to some studies, improving the folate status of
women of child-bearing age reduces the risk of occurrence of NTD.
Martha Carothers, art, had presented a lecture to the students on
visual communication principles, which included some instruction on
how to identify resources and create posters. At the final class
session, 17 posters were presented, and Dr. Sue Lowry, Student Health
Services, expressed interest in displaying some of the finished
projects in the center's waiting room.
