Memorial scholarship to honor former economics chairperson
The Charles Lanier Scholarship Fund has been established to honor
the long-time UD faculty member who died June 8. Mr. Lanier, who
joined the University faculty in 1940, was a specialist in labor
arbitration. He served as chairperson of the Department of Economics
and Business Administration from 1946 to 1961 and he was chairperson
of the Department of Economics from 1970-72.
A 1929 graduate of Davidson College, Mr. Lanier earned his
doctorate at Vanderbilt University. After his retirement in 1973, the
University established an award in his name for the senior economics
major with the highest grades.
The Charles Lanier Scholarship Fund will be an endowment to
provide scholarships for undergraduate economics majors. Dean Kenneth
Biederman has designated $1,000 from the Dean's Scholars Fund as the
initial contribution.
