Trustees tap five individuals for Medals of Distinction
Five individuals were selected to receive the University of
Delaware Medal of Distinction by trustees at their semiannual meeting.
Named to receive the honor are
* William C. Allen, a UD graduate who is architectural historian for
the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and chairperson of the board's
Architecture Visiting Committee, which has helped select architects
for the University Center, MBNA America Hall and Gore Hall;
* Katherine Esterly, a practicing pediatrician in Delaware since 1954,
who was the state's first neonatologist and who developed the
Division of Neonatology at the Medical Center of Delaware;
* Sarah Jastak-Burgess, who holds master's and doctoral degrees from
the University and who is active in the arts, having served as a
director of the Wilmington Music School, on the boards of the
Delaware Symphony, the Grand Opera House, Opera Delaware, the
Delaware Institute for Arts in Education and the Delaware Theatre
Company; and, with her husband, Leslie Burgess, donated an extensive
amber collection to the University;
* Donald J. Puglisi, MBNA America Business Professor of Finance who
has won awards for his outstanding teaching and service and who is
the faculty adviser to the Blue Hen Investment Club, a new student-
run organization that manages some of the nonendowment funds for the
University; and
* Alvin B. Stiles, retired DuPont Co. research fellow and UD professor
of chemical engineering who was one of the developers of nylon and
who holds more than 53 U.S. patents; and, with his wife, Julia,
donated numerous mineral specimens to the University.
