Historical society honors UD
The Newark Historical Society honored the University May 14 with
its 10th annual award for outstanding service to the community. The
recognition, at the organization's 15th annual meeting, was presented
to President David P. Roselle for the University's work in historic
preservation.
According to society president Bob Thomas, the University was
chosen because of the numerous properties in Newark that it has
restored and maintains.
"Over half of the buildings in Newark that are on the National
List of Historic Places are owned by the University of Delaware,"
Thomas said.
Prior to the award presentation, Thomas shared his personal
feelings about the University's historic preservation and renovation
efforts.
"Everything can't be preserved," he said, "but the University
makes an extended effort to do what it can. The Evans House and the
former Presbyterian Church [at the site of the University Center] are
indicative of this. Most private developers would have demolished
them.... The University chose to incorporate them into the new project."
