Trustee named a 'superstar'

University trustee Ilona E. Holland was among those honored by
the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce at last week's Superstars! in
Education awards presentation. In its seventh year, Superstars! honors
innovative educational programs in Delaware.
Holland, an educational consultant who served as a commissioner
on the Delaware Social Studies Curriculum Framework Commission, was on
the team that won the partnership program category. The program,
entitled "An Introduction to Social Studies: Using Art as Primary and
Secondary Source Material," encourages students to appreciate art
while incorporating it into lessons about history, geography,
economics and civics. It is a joint project of the Milford Middle
School and the Delaware Art Museum.
The students, working in small teams, learn to analyze and
categorize artwork into time periods- Roman, Middle Ages, early
American and 20th century-by closely examining the details of art
reproductions in the classroom and consulting reference books. The
students then discuss their choices, and make presentations about each
time period.
According to Holland, the team worked with teachers and the
educational community to ensure "the program was pertinent and really
integrated."
