Junior David Owen named a Barry M. Goldwater scholar
David Owen, a junior from Newark majoring in chemical
engineering, has received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
Authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1985, the Goldwater
scholarship program was established to foster and encourage excellence
in science and mathematics. The scholars, who must have an interest in
a career in math, the natural sciences or engineering and are
nominated by their colleges or universities, receive up to $7,000
annually for college-related expenses. Up to 250 scholarships are
awarded.
Owen, valedictorian of his class at Newark High School in 1993,
was a research assistant at the University last summer, involved in a
project, modeling pharmaceutical-producing micro-organisms and
predicting maximizing production profiles to improve and speed up
pharmaceutical testing. This summer, he will be working in
pharmaceutical research for Merck & Co.
In the future, he said he plans to continue his studies in
biochemistry or biomedicine.
A member of the Golden Key and Alpha Lambda Delta honor
societies, Owen is secretary of Tau Beta Phi, the engineering honor
society.
