Four University of Delaware students received awards at the 60th
Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention April 13 at Ursinus
College, where 53 research papers were presented by undergraduates
from 14 area colleges and universities.
Laura Jane Swanson, junior, whose adviser is Harold White, won
first place in the biochemistry division for her paper, "The Evolution
of a Research Project: Phosphorylation in Riboflavin Binding
Proteins."
Catherine W. Jones, senior, whose adviser is Klaus Theopold, won
second place in the inorganic chemistry division, for her paper,
"Tris(pyrazolyl)borate Cobalt Complexes and Their Reactivity toward
Dioxygen."
Charles J. Bergquist, senior, whose adviser is Douglass F. Taber,
received a second-place award in the organic chemistry I division for
his paper, "Chromium-Mediated Diene Cycloisomerization."
Keith R. Hornberger, junior, whose adviser is H. Keith Chenault,
received a second place award in the organic chemistry II division for
his paper, "Efficient In Situ Regeneration of ATP from ADP for the
Hexokinase-Catalyzed Synthesis of Derivatives of Mannose and
Mannosamine-6-Phosphate."
According to John Burmeister, Alumni Distinguished Professor of
Chemistry and Biochemistry, the University is tied with Franklin and
Marshall College for the largest number of awards (58) received since
1949, when records became available.
Temple University has received 12 awards, the University of
Maryland at College Park has received five awards and Rutgers
University has received three awards.
Nine UD students, including seven presenters plus five faculty
