Hubble findings are topic of talk
Discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope since its in-space
repair is the topic of the H.C. Vernon Memorial Lecture, to be given
by Robert Williams, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute,
at 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, in the Clayton Hall auditorium.
Williams will review the post-repair findings, including the
birth of new stars, the galaxies populating the deep reaches of space,
the surface of Pluto and many other discoveries.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a
doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, Williams has been director
since 1993 of the Space Telescope Science Institute, located on the
Johns Hopkins University campus.
With the Goddard Space Flight Center, the institute operates the
orbiting Hubble Space Telescope for the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration.
Prior to that, Williams was director of the Cerro Tololo Inter-
American Observatory in Chile and also served on the University of
Arizona faculty for 18 years.
His research specialties are novae, which are exploding stars,
and spectroscopy, the analysis of light from distant objects.
At the institute, Williams has responsibility for the entire
science program, including the scheduling and operation of the
telescope, the acquisition of data, the placement of data in an
archive which the public can access and the oversight of the data
analysis.
The free, public lecture is sponsored by the Mt. Cuba
Astronomical Observatory in cooperation with the University.
