University Center's opening day exceeds expectations

     The $21.3 million University Center opened April 29 complete with
steel band music and visits from YoUDee, the Fightin' Blue Hen mascot,
and Mr. Taco, representing Taco Bell Restaurant.
     Thousands of students, faculty, staff and visitors were there for
opening day, many visiting the food court.
     According to Brad Bingaman, food service director of the
University Center, the response was better than expected for a first
day of operation.
     Much of the seating area, which can accommodate close to 400, was
occupied as first-time visitors admired the blue and gold neon
lighting and attractive banners hanging from the ceiling.
     The University Center will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight. The
food court hours are 7:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m.
     The building also includes Daugherty Hall, a quiet study area;
conference and meeting rooms and program space for a variety of
student functions; an auditorium-style, state-of-the-art movie
theatre; a large, multi-purpose room; and a second-floor restaurant to
be operated by students in the Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional
Management Program.
