Rafia Bhore '96 Hoerl recipient
Rafia N. Bhore, a doctoral student in statistics in the
Department of Mathematical Sciences, received the 1996 Arthur E. Hoerl
Meritorious Student Paper award from the Delaware Chapter of the
American Statistical Society.
The award-a certificate and $300-was presented at a luncheon
April 19 in Clayton Hall.
A graduate of the University of Bombay in India, Bhore received a
master's degree in mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology
and a master's degree in statistics and operation research from
Pennsylvania State University.
Open to students in accredited graduate programs in the state of
Delaware, the award honors the late Prof. Hoert, a statistician and
educator, who was the first statistician hired by the DuPont Co. in
1950.
He later served on the University faculty from 1967-1986. He
developed ridge regression, a widely used statistical method, for
which he was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association.
