Anna White named recipent of Harry S. Truman Scholarship

     Anna White of Newark has won a highly competitive Harry S. Truman
Scholarship, given to outstanding juniors who are committed to careers
in public service.
     Truman Scholars, who are selected from each of the 50 states and
territories, are eligible to receive $3,000 for the senior year of
undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies.
     Nominations for the award come from the students' colleges and
universities.
     Majoring in anthropology and international relations, White was
president of the Student Environmental Action Coalition on campus from
1992-95, and she coordinated Earth Day activities in 1995.
     She also served on the Honors Council the Delaware Undergraduate
Student Congress in 1994-95, was a columnist for The Review in 1995
and a member of the Wilmington News Journal Community Advisory Board
in 1992-93.
     She has received a University of Delaware Honors Program
Scholarship and the Barbara Hughes and Edwin C. Buxbaum awards, both
in anthropology.
     A graduate of Newark High School, White has been involved in
several community projects while in high school and in college,
including a Hurricane Hugo clean-up in South Carolina, low-income
housing renovation in Yonkers, N.Y., and a construction project in El
Salvador through the "Bridges to Community" organization.
     She also has been active in Pacem in Terris for many years
     The daughter of Jean and Harold White, chemistry and
biochemistry, she took a year off to participate in the University of
Minnesota Studies in International Development program.
     After a semester of language and cultural courses at Minnesota,
White went to Senegal where she is working on a project involving
population issues.
     White will return to the University next fall for her senior
year.
