Memorial service set Oct. 15 for Barbara Rexwinkel
Barbara J. Rexwinkel, 47, of 703 Springcreek Ct., Newark, died
Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Christiana Hospital. Cause of death was cardio-
respiratory failure.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15, in
the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark at 420 Willa Road.
Burial was Sept. 8 in Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton, Iowa-where
Ms. Rexwinkel grew up.
David G. Butler, executive director of housing and conference
services at the University of Delaware, said, "Barb was a highly
competent professional who consistently worked for the good of
students. She will be sorely missed by all of us who have known her
over the years."
After earning her bachelor's degree in psychology from Iowa State
University in 1969 and her master's degree in college student
personnel administration in 1972, Ms. Rexwinkel came to the University
of Delaware, serving as a residence hall complex coordinator from 1972-
75. She then worked for five years at Washington State University, as
assistant director for residence living and later as student
employment coordinator and a financial aid officer.
She returned to the UD in 1980 as associate director for
residence life, a position she held until 1986 when she was named
associate director for administration. In 1994, she was named director
of housing assignment services.
At the time of her death, Ms. Rexwinkel was a candidate for a
Ph.D. in social psychology at the University.
Cynthia Cummings, director of residence life, called her "a truly
dedicated member of the University community. Barb's commitment to
diversity and multicultural education was unrivaled on this campus.
She was a strong and loyal ally to members of all of our society's
oppressed groups."
Over the years at Delaware, Ms. Rexwinkel served on the
Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity, the Commission on
the Status of Women, the Advisory Committee for the Retention of Black
Students, the Student Affairs Professional Development Committee, the
Employee Relations Advisory Committee, the Student Information Systems
Steering Committee, the Network Services Advisory Committee, the
Student Computing Initiatives Committee and numerous search committees
and other task forces.
Ms. Rexwinkel had completed numerous specialized training
programs, including those on prejudice reduction and conflict
resolution, group dynamics that support diversity and empowerment of
group members, understanding and managing diversity, and individual
and group dynamics in the workplace.
Survivors include her husband, Elliott A. Nowak, of Newark; her
parents of Orange City, Iowa; a brother and his wife of Le Mars, Iowa;
two nieces, a nephew and uncles and aunts.
