Legal studies minor now available

Legal studies is an excellent option as a minor for students in
every field of study because legal issues are an integral part of
everyone's personal and professional life and society itself,
according to Valerie Hans, new director of the program and professor
of criminal justice.
"Law is not the province of one discipline but can be looked at
from many perspectives," she said. "Knowing how the law works is as
important in knowing how the world works."
Although the minor is an appropriate choice for someone
interested in the legal profession as a career, pre-law is not the
focus, Hans said. The program is designed for all undergraduates,
regardless of their majors, who are interested in a multifaceted
approach to legal studies. Each enrolled student is assigned an
adviser, and the program also offers lectures, faculty seminars and
films.
Courses for the interdisciplinary program are offered in
accounting, philosophy, criminal justice, sociology, economics,
political science and international relations, psychology,
communication and women's studies.
Students select three courses from more than 30 offered, such as
"Law and Social Issues in Business," "Gender, Sex and American Law,"
"Congress and Public Policy" and "English Legal and Constitutional
History."
They also must complete "Introduction to Law" and "Introduction
to Legal Studies," complementary courses that give a historical,
philosophical and overall view of law and legal issues, and they must
participate in a "Senior Seminar" that requires a research paper.
