Summer session-registration from coast to coast

The University's Summer Session pre-registration system is now
available on the World Wide Web. The system is one of the very first
in the country to allow potential students to submit biographical
information and register for classes.
"We are in the lead with a very few other institutions such as
the University of Hawaii and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in
offering summer session students the ability to initiate their student
record and then to register for classes," Allan Fanjoy, international
programs and special sessions, said.
"Having summer session students able to choose one of three ways
to register for classes is very exciting," Fanjoy said. From May 8-10,
students will be able to register in person at the Student Services
Building, via UD Phone and-for the first time-via an interactive Web
form.
Fanjoy said the online system is designed to make things easier
for all summer session students, particularly those enrolled at
another college but planning to spend the summer in Delaware.
"If the prospective summer student is not currently a student
here," Fanjoy said, "the online form prompts him or her for the
information required to take a class as a continuing education
student." Prospective students are then allowed to submit advance
course requests. After receiving their UD PINs in the mail, these
"new" students will be able to participate via UD Phone or the Web.
"One of the challenges was coming up with an equitable way to
handle course registrations in three different ways," Roger Cole,
management information services, said. To make sure that no group of
registering students has an advantage over another group, Cole said
all advance course requests would be added to the registration
database on the morning of May 8. "That seemed like a fair way of
giving existing students and new students an equitable opportunity to
enroll," Cole said.
Fanjoy said he believes that this new trio of Web forms will help
Summer Sessions reach out to students not previously served by the
University. "By collecting biographical information and advance course
requests and by allowing interactive registration in May, we are
making it easier and more convenient for students to enroll," he said.
