Center schedules Newark classes

     The Small Business Development Center at the University has
scheduled a variety of workshops in May, all aimed at helping small
businesses prosper.
     "Selling Strategies That Work" is scheduled from 6:30-9:30 p.m.,
on Thursday, May 2. Those attending will have a chance to develop a
strategic approach to targeting their market, learn the sales process
and telemarketing skills, and discuss networking, building rapport
with customers, handling objections and closing a sale. Cost is $20.
     Scheduled for 6:30-9:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, May 7 and 9,
is "Record-Keeping Fundamentals," a class designed to help those
attending develop a system that meets their needs. Cost is $30.
     Slated for Thursday, May 16, is a class on "Personnel Policies
and Employee Handbooks." Meeting from 6:30-9:30 p.m., the class will
discuss development of an employee handbook as a means of establishing
positive employee relations, consistent communication and legal
safeguards. Cost is $20.
     "Starting Out in Business Basics" is scheduled from 6:30-9:30
p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, May 21 and 23. The course discusses the
daunting tasks involved in starting or growing an existing small
business. Topics include forms of business, business licenses, record
keeping, taxes, insurance, benefit planning, choosing a location,
marketing tips, the business plan and sources of financing.
