Jazz Tap Ensemble programs set
The Jazz Tap Ensemble, composed of performers known for their
fine blend of tap dancing and jazz music, will present a lecture
demonstration, a master class and a performance, all from May 3-5 in
Mitchell Hall.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1979, Jazz Tap operates on the simple
but logical principle that tap dancing and jazz music are
complementary art forms.
"Great tap dancing has a way of lulling you into closing your
eyes for a bit so as to savor the sounds of feet inextricably entwined
with the music-to be engulfed by pure rhythm. But then something
happens, alerting the eyes to open and really look at the performers
and wonder how the heck they do it," Tom Wachunas wrote in Dance
Magazine, after seeing a Jazz Tap performance.
The internationally known group will be at the University on
Friday, May 3, for an evening lecture demonstration at 7:30 p.m. and
will hold a master class at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 4. Advance
registration is required for both.
A performance is scheduled at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 5. Tickets for
this performance are $15 for the general public, $10 for University
faculty, staff and senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are
available through the Hartshorn box office by calling 831-2204 or in
person at the box offices in the Bob Carpenter Center or in the
Perkins Student Center. For special accommodations, please call 831-
2206.
