Blacks and Jews topic of program

     Julius Lester, noted author, songwriter, radio and television
host, will discuss "Blacks and Jews: Where We Are and What We Can Do"
at 7:30 tonight in Room 130 of Smith Hall.
     Lester, professor of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at the
University of Massachusetts and a veteran of the civil rights
movement, has published 23 books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction.
He has received many awards, including The New York Times Outstanding
Book Award and the American Library Association Notable Book Award.
     His books, which have been translated into eight languages,
include the recent John Henry and And All Our Wounds Forgiven, a novel
about the civil rights movement.
     Lester has recorded two albums of original songs, has been host
and producer of a radio show in New York City for eight years and was
host of a live television show on WNET in New York for two years.
     He has served on the University of Massachusetts faculty since
l971, where he also is an adjunct professor in the English and history
departments.
     In 1986, he was selected Massachusetts' professor of the year by
the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
     His Newark appearance is sponsored by the Hillel Student Center
and the Frank and Yetta Chaiken Center for Jewish Studies.
