Nominations due for Boer medal
Nominations for the 1997 Karl W. Boer Solar Energy Medal of Merit
are being accepted now through Sept. 1 at the University.
The Karl W. Boer Solar Energy Medal of Merit, consisting of a
bronze medal and a $40,000 prize, is awarded to an individual who has
made significant pioneering contributions to the promotion of solar
energy as an alternate source of energy through research, development
or economic enterprise or to an individual who has made
extraordinarily valuable and enduring contributions to the field of
solar energy in other ways.
The award, funded by an endowment, is given in honor of Karl
Wolfgang Boer, a longtime faculty member of the University, founder of
its Institute for Energy Conversion and a distinguished scientist in
the field of solar cells.
Previously, the award has been given to David E. Carlson, for his
discovery and development of thin-film amorphous silicon solar cells
for the conversion of sunlight to electricity; and to former President
Jimmy Carter, for spurring development and focusing world attention on
the relatively unknown technology of safe and environmentally sound
energy production from the sun.
The recipient of the award is chosen by a panel of commissioners
composed of scientists and representatives of several solar energy-
related professional societies, including the International Solar
Energy Society, the American Solar Energy Society, the American
Physical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the American
Society of Mechanical Engineering, as well as a representative of the
U.S. Secretary of Energy and a member of the Boer family.
To obtain a nomination form, contact Stanley I. Sandler,
Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Delaware, Newark, DE
19711, or fax to (302) 831-4466.
