Chess tourney at Christiana Mall
The University Chess Club will sponsor an exhibition at noon on
Saturday, April 13, in which Delaware chess life master Paul Powell
will play 40 people simultaneously. The event will be held in front of
Strawbridge & Clothier at the Christiana Mall.
The exhibition is an annual, non-profit event to promote the game
of chess, according to Paul Gardner, senior criminal justice major and
vice president and co-founder of the UD Chess Club.
In the exhibition, Powell can play up to 40 games at one time by
alternating between chess boards. He will be challenged by members of
the University Chess Club, and also will play any walk-up contenders.
There will be no charge to play.
Powell is a former Delaware chess champion. At last year 's
event, Powell played a total of 77 games and lost only three.
Several Delaware chess notables will attend and those
participating in the exhibition will receive a free T-shirt and have
the chance to win prizes, such as gift certificates, pizza coupons and
a chess board.
"We are encouraging everyone who plays to come out and try their
hand," Gardner said.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Perkins Student Center and
several local businesses, including McDonald's, Copy Maven and Days of
Knights.
