Howard Hewett opening act for Regina Belle at concert April 12

Howard Hewett, known as the heir to Marvin Gaye's throne as king
of romantic pop, will open for headliner Regina Belle in concert at
the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday, April 12. The concert begins at 8
p.m.
Belle, who has recorded two gold albums and the platinum single
duet of "A Whole New World" with Peabo Bryson, recently released
Reachin' Back, a love letter to the music of the '70s that inspired
her life and career.
Hewett burst on the music scene as the lead singer for Shalamar,
the successful post-disco group, which topped the charts in both the
U.S. and Britain. The group's hit "Second Time Around," featuring
Hewett, was a near 2 million best seller. "For the Lover in You,"
written by Hewett, was another major hit, as were "Dancin' in the
Sheets" and "A Night To Remember."
Additionally, his original "Say Amen," written in his earlier
gospel singing days, has earned the status of a modern gospel classic.
He also has gathered critical acclaim recording duets with such stars
as Anita Baker and Dionne Warwick.
His latest release, It's Time, includes several Hewett originals,
many of them ballads that focus on romance and love.
Tickets are $25 for the general public, $20 for UD faculty and
staff and $15 for UD students with ID. Tickets are on sale at the Bob
Carpenter Center and Perkins Student Center box offices on the Newark
campus and by phone through Ticketmaster at 984-2000 or (215) 336-

The concert is being presented in conjunction with the Center for
Black Culture's 20th anniversary celebration and the annual Black Arts
Festival at the University.
