Library benefits from Sussman challenge gift
The second Marvin Sussman Challenge Gift of $10,000 has attracted
an additional $32,571.25 in gifts and pledges for the University
Library, according to John Clayton, University development.
For two years, Sussman, Unidel Professor Emeritus of Human
Behavior, has offered to match every gift or pledge to the University
Library up to $10,000.
The challenge was open to the University community and to the
public.
"We are delighted with the outcome of the Marvin Sussman
challenge and appreciate the generous response we have received from
the University community and others in support of the library,"
Clayton said.
During the 1995-96 fiscal year, gifts from faculty and staff
totaled $10,373.25; pledges and payroll deductions for the library
totaled $3,798; pledges from non-University contributors to the
Sussman fund totaled $250. Gifts to the library from alumni and
friends after the announcement of the challenge totaled $7,740; and
Library Associates year-end gifts totaled $10,1l0. In addition, there
was a $25 gift from the public, and a gift in memory of Walter Edward
Calvert from his children (Vicki Cherry, computer and information
sciences, is his daughter) totaled $275.
Sussman's challenge gift of $10,000 brought the grand total of
the campaign to $42,571.25.
Susan Brynteson, director of the University libraries said,
"Prof. Sussman's generous gift has brought the library many new
friends whose commitment is much appreciated. The funds will be used
to support library collections and services."
