5K race gets national attention in Bacchus March 13

Phi Kappa Tau's 14th annual "5K for Bruce" charity race, held
March 9, lived up to the successful precedent set during its 13
previous years. On an uncommonly cold March day, more than 800 runners
braved the weather and took to the pavement, helping to raise more
than $6,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
"The day was excellent and everything just clicked," race
chairperson Spencer Cullen, a senior, said.
President David P. Roselle's attendance at the event, which
Cullen called a "big boost," helped to raise awareness of the annual
fundraiser. Roselle delivered opening words of encouragement and fired
the starting cannon to begin the race, which has raised more than
$64,000 for charities since its inception in 1982.
The "5K for Bruce" also received national recognition on NBC's
Today Show from Willard Scott, well-known television personality.
Cullen, on a whim, sent Scott a "5K" T-shirt and cover letter with the
hope that the event would be recognized on the show. "It was a
complete shot in the dark," Cullen said.
When Cullen and his Phi Kappa Tau brothers awoke on the Thursday
morning before the race, they were in amazed as Scott held up the T-
shirt and plugged the event for almost 40 seconds. The announcement,
viewed in homes all across the country, appeared in the last segment
of the show.
"It was a real nice bonus to everything we put into the '5K for
Bruce,'" Cullen said. "We are very proud of this."
