Prof. appointed to space committees
Vic Klemas, director of the Center for Remote Sensing at the
College of Marine Studies (CMS), has been appointed to two committees
advising national agencies on space and satellite-related issues.
Klemas will serve a two-year term on the Space Studies Board of
the National Research Council as a member of the Committee on
International Programs. This committee examines U.S.-European space
research project collaborations and analyzes underlying causes of
their scientific and political success or failure.
He also is serving on the board's committee on Earth studies,
which is conducting a one-year study of small, advanced satellites for
Earth observations. The committee will assess the core observational
needs of agencies such as NASA and the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and recommend how the new
technologies can best be employed to meet those needs.
Service on this panel gives Klemas the opportunity to work with
senior scientists from various disciplines and interact with top
managers from NASA, NOAA, the Naval Research Laboratory and major
industrial firms.
Klemas, who has been associated with the College of Marine
Studies for 25 years, has conducted extensive research in the use of
satellite remote sensing to assess and monitor marine and coastal
resources in the U.S., Europe and South America.
He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical
engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a
doctoral degree in optical physics from the University of
Braunschweig.
