On the job

I am one of two staff nurses who work year-round. Before the
patients see the physician, I interview them and document their
medical history. I assist the patients and physicians in various
capacities.
"Although the most common health complaints that we encounter are
sore throats and colds, we frequently treat serious illnesses and
injuries. The challenge of the job is that you always have to be on
guard for patients presenting symptoms that could be of a more serious
nature. You never can let yourself think the job is routine.
"I began working at the University in 1953, when Student Health
Services was housed in a small building on South College Avenue. I
remember when we made the move into Laurel Hall.
"Student health care has changed a great deal over the years. I
notice that students today are not only more willing to seek treatment
but also increasingly sophisticated in terms of knowledge of their
health-care options. I love the students. I took several years off to
raise my children, and I wouldn't have come back after 16 years if I
didn't really miss the students."
