Campus AMA chapter wins national award

The student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA)
at the University has been recognized by the organization's national
headquarters as one of the most proficient chapters in the nation.
The UD chapter recently received the national award for chapter
performance and has been nominated for the "most improved chapter
award" to be given at the AMA national conference in New Orleans in
April.
AMA is a national organization designed to provide students with
practical marketing experience. The campus chapter, which is open to
students of all majors, is growing, with its numbers almost doubling
since last year.
This rapid growth is one reason for the increased national
recognition, according to the group's president, Doug Mularz, a
graduate student working towards his MBA with a concentration in
marketing.
The UD chapter also was recognized for its wide array of
activities including a series of guest lecturers who ranged from
representatives from an advertising agency to sports marketers to
career and resume workshop experts. The chapter also served as the
host for several philanthropic events for children and is implementing
its own small business consulting firm.
The consulting firm, which is just getting under way, is designed
to help small businesses with marketing problems free of charge. Once
a business has contacted the AMA with a problem, AMA members will
research the problem area and provide marketing suggestions. The
actual implementation of the strategies will be left to the
businesses.
Mularz said 10 businesses have already contacted the firm, "with
hopefully more to come."
"With programs like this we wanted to set a foundation," said
Mularz, "so in the future the AMA will be a formidable organization."
Chapter members are now working on a new project of their own:
raising funds so they can attend the AMA national conference. The goal
is to send Mularz, and another member to the conference.
"I would love to be able to fully fund all of the officers"
Mularz said.
Anyone interested in making a fundraising suggestion or donation
to the AMA conference fund or finding out about the organization
itself can contact Mularz at 837-1249.
