Concerts feature modern composers

     Two concerts this week in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E.
du Pont Music Building will feature works by modern composers, some of
whom will be on hand for one of the concerts.
     An evening of music by winners in the 1995-96 Regional Composers
Competition will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 4.
     The winning composers will discuss their works before a
performance by UD faculty artists. The Department of Music sponsored
the regional competition, which drew more than 80 entries from a seven-
state area.
     Featured at the March 4 program are winning compostions:
     Four Evocations for Piano Solo by Kent Holliday, featuring Julie
Nishimura, piano;
     Triptych for Solo Piano by Ingrid Arauco, featuring Michael
Steinberg, piano;
     Clarinet Concert for Chamber Orchestra by Natsuki Yoshioko,
featuring Charles Salinger, solo clarinet; Eileen Grycky, flute; Lloyd
Shorter, oboe; Jon Gaarder, bassoon; Jay Hildebrandt, trombone; Nick
Eanet and Nicholas Mann, violins; Maria Lambros, viola; March Rosen,
cello; and Douglas Mapp, doublebass; and
     Aesop's Fables, for Wind Ensemble and Narrator by Anthony Watson,
featuring the UD Wind Ensemble directed by Robert Streckfuss.
     A meet-the-composers reception follows.
     At 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, New Music Delaware will present a
concert of works by ground-breaking composers of the 20th century,
including:
     Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano by Charles Ives, featuring
Nicholas Mann, violin; and Christine Delbeau, piano;
     Duo for Two Violins by Bela Bartok, featuring Nick Eanet and
Nicholas Mann;
     Opus Number Zoo for Winds by Luciano Berio, featuring the
Del'Arte Woodwind Quintet; and
     Toward the Sea by Toru Takemitsu, by the Taggart-Grycky Flute and

     Both concerts are free and open to the public. The programs are
partially funded by Meet-the-Composer, Inc. and by the Faculty Senate
Committee on Cultural Activities and Cultural Affairs.
