Chinese community marks new year

Eight inches of snow didn't prevent 250 community members from
gathering to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Feb. 16 at the Rodney
Room of the Perkins Student Center.
With Chen Fen, the chairperson of the Chinese Student and Scholar
Association (CSSA), acting as the master of ceremonies, many members
of the campus and Newark community joined hands to celebrate the Year
of the Rat and enjoy entertainment of traditional Chinese
performances, including a martial arts display, a bamboo flutist,
karaoke singing performances and soothing instrumental music.
"Celebrating the New Year is a great opportunity for community
members to get to know our culture and values," Fen said. "This was an
enjoyable time, and, despite the weather, the turnout was great."
Qing Xu, a UD graduate student and member of CSSA, came to the
United States from China exactly a year ago was one of those
celebrating the New Year on campus. "The weather hardly affected the
turnout," she said. "I'm pleasantly surprised."
