Professor leading consortium

Frank B. Murray, H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Educational Studies
and Psychology, is serving as interim president of the Holmes
Partnership-a recently formed consortium of research universities,
public school districts and organizations that represent professional
educators.
This new partnership is focused on advancing a reform agenda for
the education of professionals who work in schools.
An outgrowth of the Holmes Group, an educational reform
organization of 84 research universities, the Holmes Partnership
includes as members the National Education Association, the American
Federation of Teachers, the National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards, the American Association of School Administrators, the
National Policy Board for Educational Administration and the National
Council for Staff Development.
In a study of the accomplishments of the Holmes Group, funded by
the Ford Foundation, it was determined that links between different
groups of professional educators should be formalized to bring about
educational reform. The Holmes Partnership is the result, and the new
organization is expected to be in place by July 1, with Murray serving
as president during the transition period.
The group plans to be instrumental in the reform of schools of
education in the areas of curriculum, faculty, the development of
professional development schools, in encouraging team work between
teachers, counselors, school psychologists, administrators and others
and in recruiting under-represented minorities into the education
field.
