New equipment added to campus emergency unit

Criminal justice major Andrew Rubin, director of equipment for
the UD Emergency Care Unit, is proud of the latest piece of equipment
the student-run organization has added to its life support ambulance
systems-the semi-automatic external defibrillator.
Used to shock the heart of a patient in cardiac arrest, Rubin
said the machine keeps the emergency care unit "up with the current
pace of pre-hospital emergency care."
Each of the ambulance attendants on staff is trained to operate
the machine, which attaches two electrodes to the patient's chest to
align the proper heart rhythm before the shock.
Valued at over $4,000, the emergency care unit purchased the
defibrillator in December and has equipped its ambulance with it.
Rubin, a junior from Scarsdale, N.Y., is in his third year with
the unit and second as director of equipment.
