N.Y. string trio on campus in March
Startling acoustic improvisations and compositions for violin,
guitar and bass are the hallmarks of the String Trio of New York,
scheduled to visit the University in March.
Highlight of the visit will be a performance, with noted
composer/pianist Anthony Davis, at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 9, in
Mitchell Hall.
Other special events before the performance include a composition
workshop with Davis at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 8, and a jazz clinic
with the trio at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9. Both the workshop and
clinic will be held in Mitchell Hall.
Since its formation in 1977, the String Trio of New York has been
delighting and riveting audiences around the world. Members Regina
Carter, violin; James Emery, guitar; and John Lindberg, bass, have a
repertoire of more than 60 stylistically diverse works. Their works
include original compositions, works commissioned from composers and
arrangements of classics by Ellington, Parker, Hendrix and others.
Davis has composed music for the critically acclaimed Broadway
production of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, as well as his own
operas, X-The Life and Times of Malcom X, Under the Double Moon and
Tania.
Whether working in a jazz context, in symphonic, choral or
chamber music, opera or theatre, Davis consistently produces
challenging, compelling, inventive and original music.
Tickets for the Saturday performance are $10 for University
faculty, staff and senior citizens, $6 for UD students and $15 for the
general public.
Tickets are available at the Bob Carpenter, Perkins Student
Center and Hartshorn box offices. For information, call UD1-HENS.
