Lunch and Learn programs scheduled through spring
The Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers Lunch and
Learn programs that focus on timely topics related to mental and
emotional health, such as stress management and the challenge of
facing change.
The Wednesday workshops, listed below, are held from noon-1 p.m.
at locations in the Perkins Student Center, and pre-enrollment is
required. A minimum number is needed for each program. To register,
call 831-8308. An incorrect number was published in the Feb. 8 issue
of UpDate.
Downtime: Understanding Depression-Feb. 28, Kirkwood Room: Depression
can be a serious illness that causes persistent changes in an
individual's mood, behavior and feelings and can interfere with
work and family life. It is a medical illness, and effective
treatment is available. This workshop will cover the signs,
symptoms and other aspects of depression. Registration deadline
is Feb. 26.
Stress Management-March 13, Kirkwood Room: Stress management is a plan
of action that helps individuals meet life's challenges by
allowing them to rest and revitalize. Although the sources of
stress may be beyond one's control, this workshop discusses
stress management techniques, how to identify self-generated
stress and how to minimize stress and use relaxation techniques.
The workshop covers the general guidelines for a workable stress
management program, which can then be tailored to individual
needs. Registration deadline is March 8.
Violence in the Workplace-April 10, Kirkwood Room: Violence in the
workplace is escalating throughout the country. This workshop
will help supervisors understand the potential for violence in
the workplace, learn to identify the signs of violence, to know
the appropriate referral procedures and how and what to document
when violence occurs. Registration deadline is April 8.
Effective Listening-April 24, Kirkwood Room: Effective listening
involves listening to others without judging, condemning or
criticizing, while at the same time eliciting importnat
information from the speaker. This workshop deals with developing
effective listening techniques that can reduce the likelihood of
miscommunication on the job, which can have an impact on
productivity, morale and teamwork. Registration deadline is April
22.
Assertive Communication-May 8, Collins Room: Communication, which can
be defined as an exchange of information and opinions, involves
visual appearance and tone of voice, as well as words. The
workshop deals with the techniques of assertive communication, a
skill that improves interpersonal relationships and encourages
cooperation, compromise and teamwork. Registration deadline is
May 6.
Change Management-May 22, Collins Room: Change is a normal part of
life but can be difficult in disrupting behavior patterns and a
sense of self. Change can be especially disturbing for people who
do not feel they have the resources to ensure a favorable outcome
for themselves. The workshop introduces new strategies for
approaching change, as well as management skills to handle change
in a more masterful way. Registration deadline is May 20.
