UDARF meetings
     The University of Delaware Association of Retired Faculty this
spring will meet on Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. in the Read
Room of the Perkins Student Center.
     The spring schedule includes meetings on Feb. 20, March 12, March
26, April 16, April 30 and May 14.
     Special guest at the March 26 luncheon will be John Wriston, who
will present "Vermont Is Not New Hampshire."

Help wanted
     The New Castle County WHEELS program for the elderly is seeking
volunteers to take senior citizens to medical appointments once or
twice a month. Volunteers use their own cars but have a choice of days
and hours and may designate the area in which they can drive.

Bowling for kids
     Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Delaware is sponsoring "Bowl for
Kids' Sake," Saturday, April 13, in New Castle and Sussex counties and
Sunday, March 24, in Kent County. Last year, more than 340 teams
competed.
     Teams consist of five or six people, who solicit sponsorship on a
cents-per-pin basis from their friends, family and co-workers. Big
Brothers/Big Sisters provides free bowling, free food and prizes and
is responsible for collecting pledge money.

Annual conference
     The Delaware Women's Conference will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday,
March 2, in Clayton Hall.
     Wilma Mankiller, former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation,
will provide the keynote address.
     Registration fee is $35. Free child care can be arranged.
Volunteer guides also are needed to provide assistance during the
event.

Children's camps
     David Wacker, an expert on summer camps for children, will be
interviewed on WVUD (91.3-fm) at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, on Feedback.
The weekly interview program will discuss the benefits of summer camps
and should be of interest to parents of camp-age children.
     Program director David Alperson will host the show.


AAUW book sale
     The Wilmington branch of the American Association of University
Women (AAUW) will hold its Dollars for Scholars annual book sale at
the Concord Mall from 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, March 7-9,
and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, March 10.
     The sale will feature 50,000 books, including hard-to-find sets,
art collections, sheet music and 78 RPM records in excellent
condition.
     Proceeds of the sale will benefit the branch's scholarship
foundation.
     Among the Wilmington branch scholarships awarded each year is the
Mather-Smyth scholarship. Established in 1915 by the Delaware
Association of College Women, which became a part of AAUW in 1923,
this scholarship has been given each year to a qualified woman in the
Wilmington area to attend the former Women's College, now the
University of Delaware.


Dance lessons
     The Ballroom Dance club is offering three 10-week, beginning
dance lessons. All classes will be held from 8-9 p.m. in Pearson Hall
gymnasium. General ballroom dance classes will begin Sunday, Feb. 25
and Tuesday, Feb. 27. Classes on jitterbug, jive, hustle and swing
will begin Thursday, Feb. 29.
     The cost is $25 for students and $50 for non-students. Private
instruction is offered for $20 per hour or $50 for three hours.

Fight cancer
     The American Cancer Society honored the UD as one of its top 10
supporters of Daffodil Days at its kickoff Jan. 18 at the PNC Bank
Center. Kay Wood, admissions, accepted the award. Last year UD
employees purchared 595 bunches of flowers, and the University was the
sixth highest Daffodil supporter, netting $2,380 for American Cancer
Society programs and research. For information or order forms to

Martial arts
     Taiji Quan, a popular branch of the Chinese martial art Wushu, is
being offered by Recreation and Intramural Programs. The eight-week
program will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon-1 p.m. for
beginners, and from 1:30-2:30 p.m. for intermediates. Classes begin
Feb. 20 in the Carpenter Sports Building mat room.
     The class will be taught by Zang Xichuan, who has taught Wushu in
America, Japan, Australia and Belgium. The cost is $50 (Wellness

Ag conference
     The 1996 Governor's Conference on Delaware's Agriculture will be
held at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 23, at the Sheraton in Dover, after the
Friends of Agriculture Breakfast, beginning at 7:15 a.m.
     The conference will feature speakers from government, academia
and industry, speaking on promoting agriculture and encouraging
economic progress. Gov. Thomas R. Carper will address the conference
at 1 p.m., after lunch.
     The event is sponsored by the Department of Food and Resource
Economics in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Delaware
Cooperative Extension, among others. The cost, including lunch, is
$20; the Friends of Agriculture breakfast is an additional $7. For

Free hot drinks
     Circle K will distribute free hot chocolate from 8 a.m.-noon,
Wednesday, Feb. 21, in front of the Perkins Student Center.
