Teleconference set in Pearson Hall
A teleconference on partnerships between two- and four-year
colleges will be held from 1:30-4 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, in Studio
A, Pearson Hall. Produced by the College Board, the conference is
free and is sponsored on campus by the Office of Admissions and
Division of Continuing Education. Anyone interested in recruitment or
interrelating with two-year schools is invited to attend.
Topics include two-plus-two programs, reverse transfer programs,
electronic articulation, distance degree completion programs and
statewide telecommunications partnerships. The conference will profile
a variety of model partnerships, including the California State
System, Coast Community College, Old Dominion University and Rio
Salado Community College.

Talk on future of American studies
Emory Elliott, professor of English at the University of
California at Riverside, will discuss "The Future of American Studies"
at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, in Room 100 of Memorial Hall.
A prolific writer, Elliott is the author of such books as Power
and the Pulpit in Puritan New England and Revolutionary Writers:
Literature and Authority in the New Republic, 1725-1810. In 1989, he
received the American Book Award for The Columbia Literary History of
the United States.
He is general editor of The American Novel, a series of critical
studies with 30 volumes in print.
Last year, he was named a Distinguished American Specialist to
China for the United States Information Agency, and he directed the
International American Studies Faculty for the first Salzburg Seminar
Institute in Lodz, Poland.
The lecture, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the
Department of English and the Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural
Activities and Public Events.
Islam in England topic of lecture
Nabil Matar, professor of English at the Florida Institute of
Technology, will speak on "Merchants, Pirates and Ambassadors: Muslims
in Renaissance England" at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Room 120 of
Memorial Hall.
A scholar of Renaissance literature and the Arab world, Matar is
the author of the books Peter Sterry: Select Writings and Islam for
Beginners.
His most recent book, Islam in Early Modern Britain, is under
consideration for publication by Cambridge University Press. Matar has
held fellowships at the Salzburg Seminar, Harvard University and the
University of Cambridge, where he received his doctorate.

Technicians at photo exhibition
The 63rd Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography will
be held from Sunday, Feb. 18, through Sunday, Feb. 25, in Clayton
Hall.
The world-class exhibit is the oldest photographic exhibition
continuously sponsored by the Photographic Society of America. Each
year, thousands of entries from all over the world are juried by
highly qualified judges.
The prints are on display, and slides are presented using
multiple projectors with carefully choreographed musical background
and appropriate voice-overs. Expert printmakers are on hand to
critique selected prints and to increase public understanding and
appreciation of fine art photography.
A new attraction this year will be a Foto Fair, from 12:30-5
p.m., Sundays, Feb. 18 and 25, in the main gallery during the
exhibition.
Local photographic dealers and suppliers will display the latest
in cameras and accessories.
Technicians will be on hand for demonstrations and to answer
questions about equipment, film and services. Members of the Delaware
Camera Club will be available to discuss all aspects of photography,
such as composition, special techniques, lighting effects, equipment
selection, printmaking and membership in the Delaware Camera Club.
The free public exhibition also will be on view from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m., Monday through Friday.
Students invited to volunteer fair
Students of all majors, student organizations, service clubs,
sororities and fraternities are invited to the Volunteer Fair, from
3:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Education Resource Center
and the lobby of the Willard Hall Education Building.
Organizations, ranging from the Newark Day Nursery to Junior
Achievement, have been invited to attend, hand out information and
answer questions about volunteer activities.
The fair is sponsored by the Center for Intercultural Teacher
Education and the Office of Clinical Studies.
ADD meetings being on Friday
Students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) are invited to a
series of meetings to share experiences informally with others.
The first session of the semester begins on Friday, Feb. 16, in
116 Purnell Hall.
Sign-in begins at 7 p.m., discussion will take place at 7:30 p.m.
and pizza refreshments will begin at 9 p.m.
The ADD Network will meet monthly on Fridays. The first session's
topic is "I Can't Get There from Here: Dealing with Expectations and
Frustration."
Other meetings and topics include: March 8, "It's In There
Somewhere: Capturing Your Specific Strengths"; April 26, "Why Try
Harder? Finding Motivation and Self-Advocacy"; and May 10, "Seeing the
Future: One Step at a Time."
A parallel group has been formed for parents, who will meet in
118 Purnell Hall at the same time as the young adult group.
The schedule of topics includes: Feb. 16, "Do You Know Where Your
Children Are?: Understanding the Mix of Expectations, Confusion,
Frustration and Dreams"; March 8, "Tell Me a Story and I'll Draw You a
Picture: Helping Young Adults to Express What They Know"; April 26,
"Social Skills for Parents: Building Confidence in a Young Adult with
ADD"; and May 10, "Seeing the Future: One Step at a Time."

Mortar Board meeting Feb. 22
The Mortar Board Honor Society will hold an information session
for prospective members at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, in 140 Smith
Hall.
All juniors and non-graduating seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA
are invited to attend. Applications will be distributed.

Ballroom dancers at staff luncheon
The University of Delaware Ballroom Dance Club will be featured
at the University Staff Association luncheon, to be held at noon,
Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
The menu will be cheese pizza, tossed salad with house
vinaigrette, brownies and cookies, coffee, tea and iced tea. The cost
is $5, or 25 cents for those bringing brown bag lunches.

Faculty recital in Loudis on Friday
Patrick Evans, baritone, and Julie Nishimura, pianist, will be
featured in a faculty recital at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, in Loudis
Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
The free public concert will include Chansons villageoises by
Poulenc, an aria from Ralph Vaughan Williams' Pilgrim's Progress;
Selections from the AIDS Quilt Songbook by various composers,
including Ned Rorem, and pieces by Aaron Copland, Stephen Foster,
Charles Ives and others.
Coke and 'Friends' will get together
Friends and Diet Coke's Ultimate Get Together will be held 8
p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, in The Hen Zone of the Perkins Student
Center. There will be 50 campuses participating in the Get Together,
watching the Friends TV show with free Diet Cokes, free snacks,
limited Friends memorabilia and a chance to win a free trip to a
taping of a Friends episode.
Students across campus also may hold their own Get Togethers and
receive the free items.
To host an event, UD students with ID must sign up between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m. today and tomorrow, in the Perkins Student Center
Concourse. The free items will be available for pick-up before 8 p.m.,
Feb. 22, in The Hen Zone.
