DELTA leadership conference open to undergrads
The DELTA (Delaware Educational Leadership Training and
Activities) Conference of, for and by students is being held on campus
Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23. All undergraduates are welcome and
encouraged to participate in the conference, which is free of charge.
The deadline for registration is Sept. 15, when forms must be
returned to the Office of Greek Affairs, 401 Academy St., located next
to the Perkins Student Center.
The leadership conference was organized as a service to the
University community by Bill Werde, president of the Interfraternity
Council and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, and Allyson Rhatican,
president of the Panhellenic Council and a member of Phi Sigma Sigma.
They worked in conjunction with Chris Cook, coordinator of Greek
affairs, Roland Smith, vice president for student life, and Scott
Mason, assistant director of the student center.
"This is a campus-wide leadership conference and not intended
only for the Greek community," Werde said. "The Delta Conference is
open to all undergraduates and student organizations with the goal of
encouraging students to take a more active and effective part in
campus life by developing leadership and organizational skills.
Everyone is invited to attend, and we hope every organization will
send representatives. We also urge freshmen to attend, because they
are the leaders of tomorrow."
Well-known campus and corporate speaker Will Keim will speak at
the conference both days. With a Ph.D. from Oregon State University,
Keim is an educator and campus minister who understands students and
the major issues facing them. He is the author of The Education of
Character: Lessons for Beginners and Life after College: Lessons for
Students in Transition. He has spoken before more than 2 million
students representing 750 campuses in the United States and Canada.
Among his corporate clients are AT&T, IBM, State Farm Insurance and
Delta Airlines.
The DELTA Conference will kick off with a rally, featuring Keim,
at 3 p.m. Sept. 22, on the North Mall, followed by reception. A
Presidents Dinner, to which presidents of all campus organizations or
their representatives have been invited, will be held with Keim that
evening. At 7:30 p.m., entertainment for everyone registered for the
conference will be provided in the Hen Zone of the Perkins Student
Center.
The conference will continue Saturday, Sept. 23, with workshop
information and registration at 10 a.m., followed by a general
assembly, featuring Keim, at 11 a.m. in the Perkins Student Center.
From 1:30-4:30 p.m., a series of workshops on leadership and
organizational issues will be held.
"The facilitators for the workshops have been carefully selected
for their enthusiasm and their expertise. The workshops are designed
to be interactive, not just lectures, so that students can ask
questions and discuss the issues. The topics will not be broad and
vague but will address specific concerns of students and student
organizations," Werde said.
