SERVICE AND AWARDS

     Kathryn L. Kotula, animal and food sciences, as scientific
     adviser to the National Broiler Council, was a guest on The
     Morning News, July 3, cable news Channel 8 serving Washington,
     D.C., suburban Maryland and northern Virginia.

     Susan S. Barton, plant and soil sciences and Cooperative
     Extension, received the 1995 Nursery Extension Award from the
     American Association of Nurserymen, a national organization for
     nursery and landscape professionals, for her outstanding
     contributions to the industry.

     Adarshpal S. Sethi, computer and information sciences, was named
     to the board of editors, Journal of Network and Systems
     Mangement.

     Two members of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences were
     recognized at the American Phytopathological Society meeting,
     Aug. 11-16, Pittsburgh. Robert B. Carroll, who served as a
     "Society Officers" member of a college bowl-type competition
     during the meeting, received a plaque and citation for his
     outstanding service as councilor of the Potomac Division from
     1992-1995. Thomas A. Evans, who organized and conducted a plant
     disease diagnosis competition at the meeting, was appointed to a
     three-year term as associate editor of Plant Disease, an
     international journal of applied plant pathology.

     Karl W. Boer, Distinguished Professor of Physics and Solar
     Energy, is author of a patent recently assigned to the
     University, "Inverse Delta-Doping for Improved Open-Circuit
     Voltage of Solar Cells and Photo Diodes."
