Some facts about heart disease, the nation's 'Number 1' killer

Heart disease is the nation's leading cause of death. During February,
the Employee Wellness Center will offer several programs focusing on
heart wellness.

Q: Who is at risk for developing heart disease?
A: Risk factors include heredity, diabetes, mellitus, elevated
cholesterol, obesity, cigarette smoking and a sedentary lifestyle.
Many women have the mistaken belief that heart disease affects men
only. More American women die each year from heart disease than
from all forms of cancer combined. Coronary heart disease may have
different symptoms in women than in men. For women, fatigue and
chest discomfort, rather than chest pain, may be signs of a
   problem.

Q: How are levels of cholesterol determined?
A: Cholesterol level is determined by testing a small sample of blood.
Test results may be ready in minutes, or may require laboratory
analysis, depending on the method used. In general, an ideal
cholesterol level is 200 mg/dl or less. Further analysis can be
done to determine levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad
cholesterol). HDL levels should be above 35; ideal LDL levels are
   below 130.

Q: If my cholesterol level is high, how can I lower it?
A: Initially, dietary and exercise guidelines are advised. Weight loss
is also beneficial, as needed. In some individuals, medication is
prescribed if the initial therapy is ineffective.

Q: What services are available on campus?
A: A registered dietitian is available for one-on-one counseling:
