National search begins for Charles M. Forbes' successor

     Charles M. Forbes, vice president for development and alumni
relations at the University of Delaware, has asked that a search begin
for his successor, President David P. Roselle announced today.
     Forbes will continue to serve as vice president throughout the
national search for his replacement, Roselle said. Advertising for the
position is now under way, and a search committee will be appointed
soon, Roselle said.
     During the search process, Forbes will continue to serve in his
current position. When a new vice president is appointed, Forbes will
become special assistant to the president, collaborating on several
donor initiatives now in progress, Roselle said.
     "We will endeavor to bring those to successful conclusion and
thus benefit the University," he said.
     "I appreciate Charles' leadership of the University's overall
development efforts. The fact that he has also caused us to succeed in
capital campaigns totaling $35.6 million is especially noteworthy, and
these buildings will stand as his important, lasting contribution to
the University of Delaware," Roselle said.
     Forbes came to Delaware in 1992. The capital campaigns referred
to are
        * Gore Hall, a new classroom building on the Mall, the first
          addition to the heart of the campus since 1962 (made
          possible by a gift of $15 million from alumnus and trustee
          Robert W. Gore, alumna Sarah I. Gore and Genevieve W. Gore);
        * construction of the new student center, scheduled to open
          next month ($1.6 million raised from the private sector);
        * the expansion and renovation of Colburn Laboratory, home of
          the University's Department of Chemical Engineering (nearly
          $7 million raised from friends, alumni and corporations);
          and
        * MBNA America Hall, new home of the College of Business and
          Economics, and renovation of Purnell Hall (nearly $4 million
          raised from the private sector, including $2.5 million from
          MBNA America and a $1 million gift from benefactor Chaplin
          Tyler of Hockessin).

     A native of Newport News, Va., Forbes earned his bachelor of
science degree in industrial engineering from Virginia Tech in 1949.
Over the years, he has worked at the DuPont Co., the Olin Mathieson
Chemical Corp., Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York
City and, before coming to Delaware, at Virginia Tech.
     He and his wife, Pat, have two children, both of whom are UD
graduates.
