Immigration is topic of talk

As part of the University by the Land and Sea lecture series in
Lewes and Seaford, Mark J. Miller, political science and international
relations, will discuss "Immigration: Should We Close the Door?" on
Monday, Feb. 5.
The free public lecture is scheduled at 10 a.m. in Room 104 of
Cannon Laboratory on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes and again at 2
p.m. in the auditorium of the Methodist Manor House in Seaford.
His lecture will include four segments, beginning with the
consideration of Proposition 187 in California and whether adoption of
this measure can be interpreted as a dramatic departure in U.S.
immigration history. The second segment will review the history of
U.S. immigration, and the third will examine the status of current
legislative proposals dealing with legal immigration and measures to
reduce illegal immigration. Miller will assess the future of
immigration policy and its effects on U.S. society in the final part
of his talk.
A member of the UD faculty since 1978, Miller has published more
than 30 articles and five books, including The Age of Migration, which
he coauthored with Stephen Castles.
He has been asked to report on developments in international
migration in Europe by a number of different U.S. government agencies
including the Carter administration's Interagency Task Force on
Immigration and the current Commission on Immigration Reform. He has
testified eight times before various congressional committees.
The next program in the series, sponsored by the Office of Alumni
and University Relations, will be on Monday, Feb. 12, when Willett
Kempton will discuss "Global Climate Change and the U.S. Public."
