Kathleen Hollowell receives math award
Kathleen Hollowell, associate director of Secondary Mathematics
In-service Programs at the University, received the G. Cuthbert Webber
Award for her contributions to the advancement of mathematics
education at a Dec. 5 campus ceremony and reception.
The Webber award honors the late UD professor and former
chairperson of mathematics and has been given biennially since 1983 by
the Department of Mathematical Sciences to recognize Delawareans who
have contributed significantly to mathematics education. This year's
selection committee was chaired by John G. Bergman, associate
professor in the department.
Hollowell has been involved in improving math education in the
state through the implementation of the Curriculum and Evaluation
Standards for School Mathematics, established by the National Council
of Teachers in Mathematics. She co-directed the innovative Delaware
Pre-Algebra/Algebra Project, which was designed to train Delaware pre-
algebra and algebra teachers to implement standards-based lessons in
their classrooms. In collaboration with colleagues Ronald H. Wenger
and Bettyann Daley, this work resulted in the publication, Building
Foundations for Secondary School Mathematics. (Janson, 1995).
Hollowell served on the Delaware Mathematics Framework
Commission, which has developed a set of Mathematics Content Standards
to guide school districts in the development of their curricula and
the training of their teachers.
As a co-principal investigator of the Delaware Teacher
Enhancement Partnership, funded by the National Science Foundation,
she coordinated the Teachers Helping Teachers workshops and the
Partnership mini-courses. These projects involve middle and high
school mathematics teachers instructing their colleagues about new
approaches to mathematics education that have been used and refined in
Delaware classrooms.
She is the co-author of Precalculus and Discrete Mathematics
(Scott Foresman, 1992), the capstone book of the University of Chicago
School of Mathematics Project and is principal author of Holt,
Rinehart & Winston's newly released high school mathematics series,
Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II.
Hollowell holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Albertus
Magnus College and a master's degree in mathematics and doctorate in
education from Boston University.
