Speakers to focus on film

     Filmmaker John Waters, director of such comedies as Pink
Flamingos, Hair Spray, Cry Baby and Serial Mom, will be featured
during Winter Session as part of the Perkins Student Center's
celebration of the centenary of American film.
     Waters, the author of Crackpot and a frequent guest on Late Night
with David Letterman, will share his insights on independent
filmmaking at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the Rodney Room of the
center.
     Thomas Schatz, director of graduate studies in radio-TV-film at
the University of Texas at Austin, will open the speakers series on
Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the Ewing Room. He is the author of Hollywood
Genres and The Genius of the System, a book about the Hollywood studio
system.
     Other speakers will include Tom Gunning, professor of film at
Northwestern University, and filmmaker Robert Townsend, director of
Hollywood Shuffle, Raw and The Five Heartbeats.
     As part of the celebration, a series of films about films will be
shown, beginning at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3, in 120 Smith Hall,
with Buster Keaton's classic comedy Sherlock Jr. Other films will
include Sullivan's Travels, Sunset Boulevard, A Star Is Born, The
Purple Rose of Cairo and The Player.
     Both the lectures and films are free and open to the public.
