Chemistry again ranked in top tier

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was ranked 15th in
the number of American Chemical Society (ACS)-certified graduating
classes of B.S. chemistry majors in the country in 1994, according to
the Nov. 20 issue of the Chemical and Engineering News. The University
ranked 22 in the total number of bachelor's degrees granted in
chemistry. There are 608 ACS-certified programs in the U.S.
The University of California at San Diego, the University of
Texas at Austin and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
were the top three schools with the most ACS-certified bachelor
chemistry graduates.
According to John L. Burmeister, Alumni Distinguished Professor
of Chemistry and Biochemistry, this is the 18th consecutive year the
University of Delaware has ranked in the top 25 institutions. Only 82
schools have appeared at least once during the period of 1977 through
1994, and of these only eight have appeared in the top 25 all 18
years.
The University of Delaware had a total of 570 ACS-certified B.S.
chemistry graduates during that period, placing them eighth in the
nation, according to Burmeister.
